School and Activity Centre
Our Children’s Hospital School at Great Ormond Street Hospital and University College Hospital caters for children aged four-and- a-half to 16 years who are inpatients or staying in patient accommodation for at least 15 days.
Lessons take place within the school or Activity Centre, which are located on Level 2 of the Southwood Building.
Children who are well enough to leave their room are encouraged to come to school to work with others. But our team can also teach on the wards, for those children who can’t yet leave their rooms. We do not teach siblings of patients.
We employ fully qualified UK teachers who teach according to the UK curriculum, but we do not provide religious instruction or teach English as a foreign language.
Our Activity Centre is an education and recreational facility to which parents can drop in with their children at any time. It is for inpatients, outpatients and siblings up to the age of 19 years old. It is open daily, but closed at lunchtimes.
The Activity Centre is packed with excellent resources, including art activities, toys, games and consoles, with trained staff available to help your child take part. Our centre follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for children within nursery and reception age groups.
Each weekend the Activity Centre holds the 'Saturday Club'. This is run by our Volunteer Service, and offers fun, interactive sessions involving arts, crafts, games and sports to provide children and young people the opportunity to get away from the wards. The club is suitable for all ages.
On Tuesday evenings 6.30-8.00pm the 17th Holborn Scout and Guide Group meet at the Activity Centre. The group is open to children and young people over six years old. Each week the group have a range of activities on a different theme, and offer an opportunity for patients to make friends with other children from around the hospital.
