Overview

Dr Melanie Hiorns is a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist who works in the Paediatric Radiology department, covering all areas of general body imaging. Her specific areas of expertise include renal, urogenital, and gastrointestinal radiology.  

Melanie gained her medical degree from the University of London (UMDS) in 1990 and went on to complete her radiology training in London and Vancouver. She has been a paediatric radiology consultant for 17 years and has worked in the NHS throughout that time at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).  She works exclusively with children and young people, from 0-18 years, and in all modalities of imaging. She uses the very lowest radiation techniques (especially in fluoroscopy). She is also a general body radiologist covering all areas, but her subspecialty is tertiary and quaternary expertise in the nephrological and urogenital system and gastrointestinal radiology, particularly specialising in urinary tract infections, wetting, congenital abnormalities of the renal/urogenital tract, tumours of the urogenital tract, and in childhood tummy-ache, and surgical conditions. She has close working relationships with paediatric urologists, paediatric oncologists, paediatric nephrologists, general surgeons, paediatric gastroenterologists and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT).  

Melanie is also Clinical Director of the International and Private Patients Division at GOSH and has worked in senior management since 2006.

Melanie has 45 peer reviewed papers is a chapter author in multiple leading textbooks, and a reviewer for seven peer reviewed academic journals.
