Overview

The department of Microbiology, Virology and Infection control provides a rapid, high-quality investigation and advice service. Our laboratory performs a wide range of routine and specialist investigations in bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and virology required for the diagnosis and management of those with infection and infectious disease.

Our expert team offers a full infection control service for the prevention, investigation and control of healthcare-associated infection in patients and staff. In addition, we perform environmental monitoring for pharmacy services as well as for infection control purposes (environmental cleanliness, air quality and outbreak investigation).

The department is highly research active, specialising in the development of molecular diagnostics both in virology (especially rapid real-time polymerase chain reaction – PCR – to support the transplant services) and bacteriology (broad range PCR and sequencing in particular).
