Overview

Dr Grünewald graduated as a Medical Doctor at the University Düsseldorf in Germany, where she completed her paediatric training in 1998. She commenced her sub-speciality training in Inborn Errors of Metabolism and had the opportunity to be trained in four leading European Metabolic Centres, including Düsseldorf, Nijmegen / The Netherlands, Leuven / Belgium, and London / UK. Whilst being on a postdoctoral and clinical fellow position at the University of Leuven, her main clinical and basic research interest was focused on the emerging field of congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG). She was granted a Marie Curie Fellowship, completed her Habilitation and was elected as Privatdozent at the University of Essen. This was followed by a PhD on “Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation – Clinical and Molecular Studies” in 2006 at the University of Nijmegen.

Prior to her appointment in Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London, she worked as a Consultant in Neuropaediatrics with a special interest in Metabolic Medicine at the University Hospital in Essen/Germany. In her current position, as a consultant of Inherited Metabolic Diseases (IMDs) at GOSH, she combines clinical and academic work on a broad spectrum of IMDs.

Dr Grünewald is Chief and Principal Investigator of several international clinical trials and registries for various metabolic conditions. She is a member of National and International disease-specific networks and scientific advisory boards. She is also a Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health (ICH) / University College London. Dr Grünewald has been privileged to be asked to become the patron of CDG UK. She sees nationally and internationally referred CDG patients, coordinates diagnostics and research at GOSH and ICH, and collaborates with national and international clinical and scientific CDG networks.
