Meet Tahsin

Tahsin Sarangi, Practice Educator for Butterfly Ward and Caterpillar Outpatients

Hear from Tahsin

Tahsin, Practice educator who originally came to GOSH from the USA shared her journey with nursing

I first qualified in 2016 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia as I grew up in the USA.

I worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on a haematology/oncology ward for 3 ½ years. During this time, I also completed my Master of Science in Nursing in 2019 then moved the UK to live with my now husband and to work at GOSH from January 2020.

A few years ago, never did I imagine that my nursing career would bring me all the way to the UK, but I’m so glad it did!

It continues to be such an eye-opening experience to do nursing in a different country. Adapting to nursing in the UK has been challenging, but incredibly humbling. It has been such a privilege to learn about the diverse cultural backgrounds from our patients/families who come here for treatment from all over the world.

At International and Private Care (I&PC), we are in such a unique environment to see a variety of patients with complex needs and chronic conditions, so the skills to be learned and the potential for growth as a nurse that comes from this is unparalleled. We work in a busy environment, but the gratitude of the families, the wonderful teamwork between colleagues and of course, the “end-of-treatment” bell ringing all makes this job worthwhile.

My journey at GOSH has led me to find my passion for education.

I first explored this side of nursing when I took a secondment as a Practice Facilitator in the Blood, Cells, and Cancer directorate. When my secondment finished, I came back to I&PC where I was able to continue in the education team, leading me to where I am today as a Practice Educator within the directorate, coaching and supporting the clinical team to give the best care possible.

My experience shows just one of the many opportunities offered at GOSH to move around, try different roles, and find something that really interests you. As someone who is always looking for new learning, I have found the breadth of professional development opportunities to be incredible here, so the possibilities are endless!

From when I first reached out to the Butterfly ward manager expressing my interest to being welcomed onto the ward to now being in my current role, my background has always been embraced. I am comprehensively trained in the USA but registered as an adult nurse here in the UK. Despite this, I was given the support and resources to work here and transition smoothly.

At GOSH today, there is a larger network of international nurses with a dedicated education team, plus ward-based educators.

It is my hope that this group continues to grow here at GOSH so that we can all continue to learn from each other and thrive in this dynamic environment to give the best care possible, all while showing the true value of globalisation in the nursing profession.
