Dr. Susan (Susie) Shelmerdine, Consultant Radiologist

Dr Susan Shelmerdine, Consultant Academic Paediatric Radiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and Associate Professor at the Great Ormond Street UCL Institute of Child Health. She holds a PhD in paediatric post-mortem imaging from UCL, and her post-doctoral research interests are relating to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for children’s imaging (www.fracturestudy.com). 

 

Dr Shelmerdine’s medical/surgical and radiological training was in London where she was awarded membership and fellowship qualifications (MRCS and FRCR). She also holds a postgraduate certificate in medical education (PGCertHBE) and is a fellow of the higher education academy (FHEA). She has completed two highly competitive subspecialty fellowships in paediatric body imaging at some of the world’s leading children’s hospitals – namely GOSH, London/UK and The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto/Canada.

 

Dr Shelmerdine holds many international society roles – she is currently the chair of the AI taskforce of European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) (and also committee member for the musculoskeletal and post-mortem taskforces); Committee member for the AI and Academic Committees at the Royal College of Radiologist (RCR), Committee member for the Research and Digital eHealth Committees for the European Society of Radiology (ESR). She serves as senior editor on the for British Journal of Radiology Open and has previously served as Junior Deputy Editor for European Radiology and also Associate Editor for Clinical Radiology. Dr. Shelmerdine has published >100 peer reviewed works and contributed to several text-book and book chapters. 

 

Dr Shelmerdine is passionate about outreach and charity/volunteer work. She has previously helped deliver radiology care at children’s clinics and hospitals in Luang Prabang, Laos & Kathmandu, Nepal. She owns an adopted greyhound, who is registered as a “Pets as Therapy” dog and qualified to make visits to schools, hospitals and nursing homes to brighten everyone’s day!
