Works start soon for the Children's Cancer Centre
Together with our building contractor John Sisk and Son, we've officially confirmed that work to enable the development of our Children’s Cancer Centre (CCC) will start in 2024.
A Children's Cancer Centre at GOSH
“It is fantastic that the construction programme for this important facility is beginning," GOSH Chief Executive Mat Shaw said.
"The Children's Cancer Centre will mean children with rare and complex cancer receive care in the best possible environment, making it easier for them to be able to play, continue with school and participate in normal activities.
"It will also enhance our ability to research and innovate to develop new and kinder treatments for cancer.
“With significant outside space, a new hospital school, imaging, theatres and critical care services linked to the existing hospital, children and young people coming to GOSH across all our specialities will have access to the very latest technologies and receive care and treatment in environments that reflect their needs."
Ger Hayes, Managing Director of Sisk’s UK South business, and construction partner said:
“We are delighted to be starting work on this incredibly important project at Great Ormond Street in 2024. We will work hard with all our supply chain partners to keep disruption to a minimum for all patients and families, the local community and passers-by alike throughout the works."
Closing of our main entrance to enable work to begin
On 19 February the current hospital main entrance on Great Ormond Street will close and its canopy will be dismantled.
From then on, the new entrance for the hospital will be the Morgan Stanley Clinical Building on Guilford Street. We have installed new artwork and made changes to the route into the hospital to help children, young people and their families feel welcome and at ease.
Where is this new entrance?

How will I know about changes at the hospital?
We will ensure all GOSH patients and families are contacted by letter, text message and My GOSH to ensure they know which entrances they can use to access the hospital.

More about the construction period
As well as closing the main entrance, work to remove an old concrete crane base within the hospital site will start. There will be some infrastructure changes within the hospital such as utility and ventilation diversions.
These changes will mean that the Frontage Building is completely disconnected from the rest of the hospital and is ready to be deconstructed later in 2024.
The next major milestone is anticipated to take place in summer 2024 when Great Ormond Street becomes one-way (east to west) with hoardings along the middle of the road to create a lane for construction vehicles to access the site.
Ger Hayes, Managing Director of Sisk’s UK South business, and construction partner said:
"As members of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, we are committed to best practice and will have an open approach to talking to and engaging with people about the project as it progresses. Having a positive impact on the local community through our social value work is extremely important to us at Sisk and we look forward to working collaboratively to achieve this as the project progresses.”
How you can support the Children's Cancer Centre
The Children’s Cancer Centre is being largely funded by Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (GOSH Charity), who have embarked on their biggest-ever fundraising appeal, Build It. Beat It. The Charity is aiming to raise £300m to help build the Children’s Cancer Centre at GOSH, to save more children’s lives and to transform cancer care.
