Meet Winnie

Winnie, Hedgehog Ward manager

Hear from Winnie

Winnie has been at GOSH since 2016 and is Hedgehog ward Manager

What drew you to the nursing career?

I fell into nursing; I initially had a degree in advertising and went travelling for a few years. It was in Australia that my love for working with children was born. I began working as a nanny and when I moved to London, I decided that I would retrain and become a nurse so I could do a fulfilling job that allowed me to work with children.

What do you enjoy most about nursing?

I enjoy nursing because each day is so different, and you meet a diverse range of people who have been on these incredible journeys. What inspires me the most is how resilient the patients are. It is an honour to care for these patients. I get great fulfilment out of supporting them and their families through some of the toughest times of theirs lives.

Tell us about your nursing journey at GOSH?

I was on the rotation program when I started at GOSH. I started in Fox the BMT ward, then Bumblebee a private mixed specialty ward then Sky ward which is spinal and orthopaedics. It was on sky that I decided to stay and pursue a management role. I progressed from a band 5 to junior sister then was successful in becoming the ward manager of hedgehog end of last year. I am enjoying working in International and private care as there is such a wide range of specialities.  Children come to us from all over the world to receive life changing surgery that they could not receive in their own countries.

Being so far way for home can be daunting for our group of patients. Therefore we ensure that We build strong professional relationships with patients and families to support them in whatever way they need to make them feel more at home.
