Recognising World Diabetes Day 2022

14/11/2022

World Diabetes Day is a global awareness day held on the 14th of November each year. Around the world, more than 1.2 million children and young people live with type 1 diabetes.

This type of diabetes is caused when the body can’t make the hormone insulin, which regulates blood glucose (sugar) levels. At GOSH we also support children with rarer and more complex forms of diabetes.

This day is chosen as it’s the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin, along with Charles Best in 1922.

To mark this day, we are sharing videos about diabetes on GOSH’s new Health Information YouTube channel. The videos feature Dr Catherine Peters, a specialist in endocrinology and diabetes at GOSH.

Dr Peters

Dr Peters said I’m proud to have made these videos which could help more people to understand what diabetes is, and what it means for children and young people living with diabetes.

You can watch our new videos below and share them to help inform others about diabetes in children. Diabetes in children and young people tells you about what diabetes is. Looking after yourself with diabetes explains to young people how diabetes is controlled. Living with diabetes gives top tips for how to cope with diabetes in everyday life.

You can find GOSH’s Health Information channel on YouTube. It features our clinicians talking about other conditions such as epilepsy and autism too. The figures in this article are from the IDF Diabetes Atlas
