Dr Penny Andreou is a Specialist Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with children, young people, parents and families. She currently works as the lead psychologist for the Paediatric Metabolic Psychology service at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
She has expertise in child development, complex neurodevelopmental difficulties, long-term health conditions with associated emotional and behavioural difficulties. She has extensive experience conducting cognitive, educational and neuropsychological assessments and, psychological therapy.
Dr Penny Andreou has worked across a range of NHS services including:
- the Paediatric Metabolic Psychology service at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which provides cognitive assessments and psychological and behavioural support for children and their families living with a life-long rare metabolic condition;
- the Social Communication Disorders Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital, a leading national centre for high functioning Autism;
- Great Ormond Street Hospital’s specialist, second opinion, multi-disciplinary Neurodevelopmental Assessment service (assessments of complex Intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders);
- a community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service;
- a research trial for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for adults with Motor Neuron Disease.
Dr Penny Andreou qualified as a Clinical Psychologist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King's College London in 2009. In addition to her doctoral training, she completed a Master’s degree in Child Development, a PhD in Psychology (examining cognitive processes in childhood ADHD) and, specialist postgraduate training in Paediatric Clinical Neuropsychology.
Dr Penny Andreou is trained in the use and interpretation of specialist autism assessment tools and a wide range of cognitive and neuropsychological assessments for children and young people. She is also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for children and adults with life-limiting conditions. She draws on a number of therapeutic models and techniques in her work, including behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based approaches and Compassionate Mind Training.
She has a caring and warm approach and is passionate about supporting children and their families cope with the challenges they are faced with.
